This week on the Shasta Serenade I return after a month-long hiatus with a new show full of Americana Music. This week we’ll hear music from John Prine, Mandolin Orange, Shawn Mullins, Kelley McRae and many more. In a nod to the great creative career of Leonard Cohen I’ll play John Fullbright’s live version of “Hallelujah.” Plus, we have the concert calendar for this week during hour 2.

In this show we talk of the influence of Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup on rock ‘n roll and specifically Elvis Presley. We talk a little about Big Mabelle and her influence on the music of Jerry Lee Lewis. All this is surrounded by music from Ray Charles, Billy Ward and The Dominos, Jackie Wilson, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong and more. In hour two we explore the music of Burt Bacharach and his partners, Hal and Mack David and Bob Hilliard.

This week on the Shasta Serenade we are all over the Americana map, as usual. We’ll be playing music from John Prine’s new release, For Better, Or Worse, specifically John and Alison Krauss’ version of the 1930’s tune, Falling in Love Again first sung by Marlene Dietrich in “Blue Angel”. And we’ll have music from Claire Lynch’s new album, North by South. Mandolin Orange’s new collection, Blindfaller, is one of their more poignant releases in a long time – listen to the words of the song Wildfire. We revisit some great older tunes too, like Emmylou Harris with Glen Campbell tearing your heart out with Cheatin’ Is from 1979, and Richard Shindell’s moving You Stay Here. Plenty of music for everyone.

This week on the Shasta Serenade we start out with an old friend, Chuck McCabe, and his award-winning song, “Bad Gravity Day” from 2002. Then we’ll hear a new release by Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldar entitled “Penny’s Farm.” Kweskin and Muldar are original members of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band  which influenced greats like the Greatful Dead, The Lovin’ Spoonful,  to name just two. This week we play “Sweet to Mama” from their new album. Also new to the show is Jonah Tolchin, a folk blues artist recording for YepRock Records. We continue exploring artists new to The Serenade like Shawn Mullins, Laney Jones, The Brothers Landreth, and The Ballroom Thieves. And, we play some old favorites from folks including   Alison Krauss, John Sebastian, Dustbowl Revival, Mandolin Orange and John Prine.

Rock-A-Barry Weekend

Sep 24, 2016

This week is a Rock-a-Barry Weekend and I’m starting off with a little folk revival with the Brothers Four, and do you remember The Easy Riders? How about their only Top-10 hit Marianne? The Riders had a lot more influence in the background of 50s folk and pop music, and we talk a little about Cisco Houston, The Limeliters, Peter, Paul & Mary, and The Kingston Trio. And, let’s not forget Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash (yep, he was a big fan of folk music and Bob Dylan), and Joan Baez. All of that is just in the first half-hour, and we move on from there to Peter & Gordon, (Peter Asher became a very influential producer and manager of Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor). If you’re a fan of music from the 1940s into the 1970s, tune and I’ll give you an earful.
