NSPR News Brief: June 16

Here's your daily briefing...

Jerry, sign here: Legislators have approved a $125 billion budget, the largest in history, which now awaits the Governor’s signature. The budget restores many economies Brown sought and was approved along party lines, with Republicans casting ‘nays’ and vowing to repeal recent gasoline taxes.

Marijuana bill drifts to governor’s desk: Legislators also approved a bill helping to implement the voter-approved legalization of cannabis, but don’t expect any sweeping change soon. The real power to license or disallow the substance will remain with counties and other local jurisdictions. The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature.

Take that, Trump: The Legislature also backed a measure limiting the number of holding facilities available for detaining undocumented immigrants. The move is a blow to the Trump administration's which has vowed to boost deportations. The measure prevents local governments from signing or expanding contracts with federal authorities for immigration detention facilities. It also calls for the state's attorney general to review conditions at the centers.

Bite me: A 64-year-old Bay Area man was awarded $1.1 million by a San Mateo County jury which ruled sheriff’s deputies used excessive force when the police dog they sicced on him mauled his legs. The man, helping a neighbor retrieve a cat, had entered a fenced construction site triggering an alarm that summoned authorities.

Mutli-agency bust: Sheriff’s deputies from Lake and Mendocino Counties, along with elements of the National Guard seized nearly 200 pounds of marijuana along with 45,000 plants when they raided a compound featuring an illegally dug irrigation pond and water diverted from a creek.

And, on the California Report: Much more on the ins and outs of the state budget.
