Gun Battle Between Tehama County CHP, Fugitives Leaves One Dead

Tehama County authorities released more details yesterday about Friday night’s fatal gun fight between two apparent fugitives and a highway patrol officer.

Eighteen-year-old Austin Tyler Macon of Renton, Washington, was shot and killed by an unnamed highway patrol officer during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 just north of Red Bluff. The officer was returning fire after being struck in the thigh by a bullet, allegedly fired by Macon or his passenger.

The officer was treated for what were described as major injuries and released.

According to the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office, Macon and another man were driving a stolen white Hyundai displaying license plates associated with a different vehicle. The Hyundai was reportedly stolen from a location near Las Vegas.

A 21-year-old male passenger remains in critical condition after also being struck.
