Fires: August 17

We’ll keep seeing hazy skies in Trinity County as wildfires continue to burn more than 225 square miles. There’s officially an air quality alert until midnight tonight.

·        The Mad River Complex around Ruth Lake is close to 37 square miles. It’s 65 percent contained.

·        The Route Complex  has consumed 45 square miles and is 30 percent contained. Many voluntary evacuations have been issued. Mandatory evacuation of the end of Kerlin Creek Road remains in effect. Road closures are in effect for the Mad River and Hyampom areas.  

·        Also near Hyampom, the South Complex has burned 32 square miles. It’s 35 percent contained. Evacuations from Garrett Road to the Hyampom Air Strip have been reduced to voluntary. Other existing evacuations, as well as existing road closures remain in place. An evacuation center is set up at Solid Rock Christian Church in Hayfork.  

·        The Fork Complex, near Hayfork and Peanut is now 52 square miles in size. It’s 52 percent contained. Mandatory evacuations are in place for homes in Tule Creek and Wildwood.  

·        The River Complex, north of 299, now exceeds 61 square miles and is still estimated to be 18 percent contained.

Elsewhere in California:

·        In Lassen County, firefighters are very close to fully containing the Dodge Fire. It’s 98 percent contained and has burned 16.5 miles of sagebrush that’s a part of managed habitat for Sage Grouse. It was started August 3rd by a spark from a tree harvesting saw. 

·        In Humboldt County, wildfires totaling more than 7 square miles are burning in steep, rugged terrain. The fires are threatening Mount Lassic Wilderness, some timberland and habitat for threatened and endangered species.

·        The Jerusalem Fire northeast of Middletown has reached more than 39 square miles. All evacuations and road closures have been lifted. The evacuation center at Kelseyville High School was closed Sunday. The fire is 90 percent contained.

Recently contained fires:

·        Rocky Fire (Lake, Yolo and Colusa counties) – This fire was fully contained at 108 square miles.
