Safe Space Winter Shelter - Chico Housing Action Team

Safe Space Winter Shelter, a low-barrier program of the Chico Housing Action Team, will run this winter from December 4, 2016, through February 25, 2017. Intake starts at 6 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church - 1301 Broadway. Guests can call 211 after 11 a.m. to register for a spot. 

Here's how you can help:

● Volunteer! Click here to sign up.
● Be a Host shelter for seven nights.

● Join a team to organize a light meal for 60.

● Serve as a transportation monitor with one of our commercial bus drivers.
● Shuttle Guest belongings from Intake to Shelter (this happens every evening)

● Provide yourself and your vehicle for Guest transport, 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., MTWThF
● Donate $$ for transportation (cost is $450/week), laundry (cost about $250/week), over-the-counter medicines for pain, insomnia, cough/cold/flu (can cost $100 to $200 per week during a bad flu season).
● Donate new white cotton athletic socks, wet wipes, women’s hygiene products.
● Donate to the CHAT General Fund to be used as needs arise.

SSWS is an all-volunteer, privately funded program of the Chico Housing Action Team Checks should be made out to CHAT, with SSWS in the memo line, and sent to CHAT, PO Box 4868, Chico, CA 95927.

Note: Sheldon, the transportation coordinator, is looking for volunteers that can offer vans or buses. Personal vehicles are definitely appreciated and helpful as well. All drivers will be expected to have insurance on their vehicles, naturally. If you have or know of someone who has a van or bus we might be able to use, please contact Sheldon as soon as you can.

Crisis Intervention Team: This year there will be an on-call crisis intervention team made up of therapists, social workers and those trained in de-escalation. They will be around to help diffuse any tense situations involving those who may be having a mental crisis or be in a space of distress. The crisis team members will be an important resource volunteers can use before requesting services from Butte County Behavioral Health or the Chico Police Target Team. For more information or if you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact Lisa Currier at bridginggapsbutte@gmail.com or 510-396-5109.

The PATH Winter Emergency Shelter is open to the homeless between November 1 through April 30 each year. The Shelter location rotates among local churches in Red Bluff. See here for locations and schedule.

What can you do to help?

  • Support PATH in our local fundraisers. Join the Dollar a Month Club (Donations are tax deductible).
  • You are invited to attend board meetings to find out more information or offer your help.
  • Donate food or a hot meal, sample size shampoo, deodorant, soap, disposable razors, toothbrushes, tooth paste, combs, men’s crew socks, pillow cases, bath towels, and blankets that dry fast in the dryer.
  • You can volunteer your time and skills to teach a life-skills class for one of PATH's transitional housing programs, such as budgeting, nutrition, hobbies, etc.
  • We can also use your financial support to help keep the shelter in operation each month.
  • If you would like to learn about volunteering for the Emergency Winter Shelter please contact Elizabeth Keith at (530) 736-3959. Volunteering may require you to donate three to four hours each week or act as a substitute staff occasionally.

The Torres Shelter

The Torres Shelter is a dry shelter that serves homeless or at-risk men, women, and families. Guests must be residents of Butte County for at least 30 days. The shelter administers drug and alcohol testing and also evaluates guests on a case-by-case basis. See shelter guidelines here.

In need of: pantry items and twin-sized blankets, donations, and volunteers.

The Oroville Rescue Mission is a religious nonprofit serving the homeless and disadvantaged in Oroville and its surrounding communities. The organization offers 24 beds in its men’s shelter and 14 beds in its women and children’s shelter.

Donations can be made at orovillerescuemission.org or mailed to PO Box 2481, Oroville, CA 95965. Volunteers may call 533-9120; ask for a call back from Annie. 

The Mission specifically needs turkeys for the holiday season; new, unwrapped toys; any nonperishable food donations; new socks; hoodies; gloves to give out during the winter; toilet paper; laundry soap; dish soap; and home improvement or grocery gift cards are always needed.

The Good News Rescue Mission is Shasta County’s only homeless shelter. The shelter provides guests with up to 30 days emergency shelter and extended stays where necessary or in situations where steps to self improvement are undertaken such as job search or money savings programs.

The Twin Cities Rescue Mission provides a clean and sober facility to its surrounding communities. They assist in housing for men only and also provide food, clothing, and showers for anyone in need.

The Jesus Center

The Jesus Center is a day resource program offering a place safe from the rigors of street living. They provide meals, showers, an overnight shelter for women and children, a transitional facility for women, and other resources and referrals. Shalom Free Clinic

The Shalom Free Clinic is an alternative medical care provider entirely staffed by both medical and non-medical volunteers from Chico and throughout the surrounding communities. Its mission is to provide underinsured and uninsured children, teens, and adults with health screening, primary care interventions, health service, and education. This includes physical, mental, and behavioral health services. All services are provided free of charge.

The clinic is open very Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. No patients admitted after 3 p.m. No appointment needed. Food and refreshments served.

The clinic will provide immediate intervention for basic medical and mental/behavioral health services including:

  • Substance Abuse Counseling
  • Medication Management
  • Blood Pressure Control
  • Health Screenings and Education
  • Primary Care Management
  • Mental/Behavioral Health Counseling
  • Prescriptions/Medications
