Hear the latest news about North State performances, gallery shows, and art events, as well as interviews with artists and figures from the local arts scene.

This week on Weekend Showcase we talk with the director and several cast members from the latest production at Redding's Riverfront Playhouse -- a stage adaptation of Jane Austin's classic novel "Pride and Prejudice."  We also talk with artist Waif Mullins who's currently showing his oil paintings and pastels at the Chico Art Center.  Mullins is perhaps best known for his paintings of Bidwell Park.

On Weekend Showcase 7/1, we launch you into your holiday weekend by bringing you Fourth of July celebrations from the silver screen, from the Broadway stage and from a classic comedy album. Happy birthday America!

On Weekend Showcase this week, we talk with playwrights, actors and the producer from Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's One-Act Play Festival in Chico. We also talk with artists from the Chico Art Center's current exhibition featuring water-media paintings.

This week on Weekend Showcase we talk with the chairperson for and with two of the artists from the third annual "Musical Chairs" event benefiting the North State Symphony. At the event, happening this Saturday evening in Chico, forty north state visual artists display and auction off unique artistic versions of chairs. We also listen to songs from the fun off-the-wall musical-comedy "The Drowsy Chaperone" which is now onstage at Chico Theater Company.

This week we talk with two representatives from MoNCA, the Museum of Northern California. We'll talk about the museum's engagement with the north state and about its impending move into the Veterans Memorial building in Chico. We also sample the phenomenal Broadway show set to sweep the Tony Awards this Sunday.

June is bustin' out all over, and we've finally gotten consistently beautiful weather all across the north state. In honor of the Spring season, Weekend Showcase brings you musical theater songs and scenes all about Springtime. Hear cast recordings from classic shows as well as lesser-known ones, and hear an excerpt from a popular musical that's currently on Broadway in a Tony-nominated revival production. Grab a tall lemonade and enjoy!

On 5/20 we visit Chico's Blue Room Theatre to talk with the directors, the actors and one of the writers from "Fresh Ink," a festival of four brand-new short plays. We also talk with art photographer Paula Schultz. Her images of north state native Americans are on exhibit at Ninth Avenue Gallery in Chico.

This week we go to the Chico Art Center to talk with artist Nicolai Larsen, instigator and organizer of the current exhibit "Food In Art," running through June 3. This show features paintings, drawings, and sculptures depicting food and also displays edible art creations by local chefs and bakers. We also listen to excerpts from the current Broadway megahit "Hamilton," which just received 16 Tony Award nominations.

This week we talk with participants in "Art at the Matador."  It's at Chico's iconic Matador Motel and will feature 75 local artists and a wide diversity of artwork.  We'll talk with two of the organizers,with two of the many musicians who'll provide entertainment at the event and with one of the fire dancers who'll present unique entertainment at "Art at the Matador."

This week on Weekend Showcase we visit Butte College's Black Box Theatre to talk with the director and cast of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." We also hear from artist Paula Busch who'll be displaying her paintings at Chico's 1078 Gallery. Busch's artistic process involves hot wax, vivid pigments and string.
