Songs From Studio C: Bunnymilk

Bunnymilk

Shortly after winning the “Best Folk” and “Best Female Vocalist” awards by the Chico News & Review earlier this year for their musical duo, Bunnymilk, songwriters Kelly Brown and Lisa Marie unveiled an entirely new sound with their garage-rock band, Skin Peaks, which has since become one of the most talked-about acts here in the Chico music scene.

Bunnymilk will perform at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on Sunday, December 6th. Kelly and Lisa's garage rock alter-ego, Skin Peaks, will release their debut cassette and perform this Friday, November 20th at Duffy's Tavern in Chico.

Interview Highlights

On their song “Queen of Cups”

Kelly: This is an older song. It's actually probably one of the first Bunnymilk songs we played that was an original for this band, which was maybe like two years ago. Two or three years ago I wrote it. Lisa was getting really into tarot at the moment and I remember seeing a tarot card that was the Queen of Cups, and being really inspired by that term.

What would you say has been sort of a regular source of inspiration when it comes to songwriting?

Kelly: Definitely personal relationships and the destruction of those mostly. Most of our current work came from like a post-breakup time.

Lisa: Heartache and kind of Chico life, which includes drinking. I find the combination of the two — you could write an album with that.

Kelly: There's something really delicious about drunken heartbreak.

How do you work as a duo when it comes time to write a song?

Kelly: Lately I've been taking on more of the lyricism. Usually Lisa will come up with a sick riff, and then we'll just go off of that and

Lisa: with sad lyrics thrown on top

Kelly: ...and some crying...

Lisa: Bake it at 350 degrees for an hour, and there you go.
