CA rivers running full and cold this week: Authorities are warning that after one of the wettest years on record, hot temperatures are accelerating snow melt, which is raising the water levels of California’s rivers. Several drowning deaths have occurred recently in rivers throughout the state, according to the Associated Press. In areas near the Sierra Nevada, creeks and streams are expected to be running up to two and half times normal flow rates.

 

Governor withholds $50 million from UC; could do more: Gov. Jerry Brown says he’s withholding the funds until the UC improves its financial accountability and accepts more community college students. According to Capital Public Radio’s Ben Adler, the UC has constitutional independence. Withholding funds is one way Brown can try to influence change. Adler reports that more effective would be for Brown to restructure the Board of Regents where there are four current vacancies. Regents serve 12-year terms so Brown’s office said it’s taking exceptional time and care with its choices.

 

Two found dead in Sierra Nevada small plane crash: Authorities had been searching for the missing plane for more than a month, according to the Associated Press. The deceased, Mark and Brenda Richard of Santa Rosa, departed from Truckee-Tahoe Airport April 17. Relatives reported the couple missing after their plane didn’t land at its destination at the Petaluma Municipal Airport.

 

Democrats elected a new party leader:Capital Public Radio reports, this weekend party vice chair, Eric Bauman, won the title by 62 votes against other candidate Kimberly Ellis.
