NSPR News Brief: June 7

Here's your daily briefing...

Brown says Chinese interested in green tech: Governor Jerry Brown predicted stronger ties and more co-operation against climate change after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping Tuesday. Brown, on a trip to China, said he believes officials there will soon clear Chinese companies to invest in green technology efforts in California.

Coalition of the Willing (to Acknowledge Reality): Bucking President Trump’s retreat from a global climate treaty, Governor Jerry Brown delivered the keynote address before the Under2 Coalition, a group of nations, provinces and other subnational groups vowing to prevent worldwide temperatures from rising more than two degrees Celsius, the equivalent of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Home of the Homeless: Redding activists are vowing to drive two city council members from office, accusing Francie Sullivan and Kristen Schrader of failing to protect residents from crime and giving the homeless free reign in downtown. Calling themselves “Take Back Redding,” activists presented Sullivan and Schrader with recall notices during last night’s council meeting.

Battle over Death Penalty Continues: In November, voters were asked both to eliminate the death penalty, and to speed it up in separate statewide propositions. Opponents of executions are suing to block proposition 66 as unconstitutional. Judges hearing the case in the state Supreme Court seem skeptical that a provision requiring death penalty appeals cases to be resolved within five years, is even possible given the backlog of lawsuits and prosecutions jamming the legal system. Currently, such appeals typically take decades, not years.

Dying with Dignity: Nearly a year since California’s “Aid in Dying” law was added to the books, controversy continues. Opponents are accusing some doctors of taking advantage of the terminally ill, and are suing to have the law overturned.

Wildfire near Oroville: A brushfire swept through 91 acres of rangeland near Oroville Tuesday before Cal Fire contained it after several hours. The blaze was centered near the intersection of Nelson Avenue and Wilbur Road west of Oroville.
