Here's your daily briefing...

Becerra for AG: Governor Jerry Brown nominated Congressman Xavier Becerra as his pick to replace state Attorney General Kamala Harris in January, Capital Public Radio’s Ben Bradford reports. Harris was elected to represent California in the US Senate, replacing Barbara Boxer, who is retiring. The 12-term Congressman said he will help the state combat climate change and vigorously defend state laws should conflicts arise between California and the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Flu proves deadly: The first death this season in a person younger than 65 was reported by the California Department of Public Health Thursday. The death occurred in Southern California. According to CPDH this year there have been 11 confirmed flu-associated cases requiring intensive care unit treatment and five flu outbreaks in California. The health agency says while flu activity usually starts in October, it’s the highest between December and February. To help prevent contracting the illness, CDPH recommends getting a flu vaccine, staying home when sick, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Microsoft repaying: California schools can now apply to receive millions of dollars of computer supplies, part of a decade-old payout from a class-action settlement against Microsoft, Capital Public Radio reports. The software giant agreed to settle the case in 2003. It was accused of using its market dominance to overcharge customers.

Big league no chew: A new law took effect Thursday outlawing the use of smokeless tobacco in professional baseball parks during games or practice. A separate law passed earlier this year bans all tobacco use at youth sporting events. That measure takes effect on January 1st.

Remembering San Bernardino victims: A year ago today, 14 people were killed in a hail of gunfire during a terror attack at a county government building. The California Report has this remembrance of one of the victims.
