Here's your daily briefing...

Sanctuary City Policies Jeopardize Federal Grant Funding: The Trump Administration has sent a letter to the state saying it will withhold funds from California due to its policies regarding sanctuary cities. The proposed cut funding supports local and state law enforcement, but is a miniscule amount of the state’s city and county budgets.

One Dead After Shots Exchanged with Yuba City Police: A man died and a police officer was wounded in a shootout in front of the Econo Lodge on Palora Avenue in Yuba City early Saturday morning. Officers reported that Joseph Sin, 43, ran when he saw police who were doing a security check. Sin was wanted on a $500,000 arrest warrant for kidnapping in Marysville. Whether police or Sin shot first is still unknown and under investigation.

California Asparagus Competes for Consumers: California’s asparagus production has declined 15 to 20 percent annually since 2000. Some say the decline is due to scarce labor. According to Capital Public Radio’s Julia Mitric, limited labor means higher labor costs, which is creating competition with other countries who pay far lower wages in turn selling their asparagus at lower costs.

State Lawmakers Scrutinize Horse Racing: Two dozen bills having to do with horse racing have been introduced to the state legislature this year. Measures include granting exceptions to a state limit on races that can be held in a day and the timing of races. The industry is highly controlled in California due to its complex role as both a sport and a form of gambling.

Search for Small Plane in Sierra Nevada Continues:  Search crews are still on the hunt for a single-engine plane that went missing after leaving the Truckee-Tahoe Airport on April 17. According to the Associated Press, Civil Air Patrol Major Kathy Johnson said Sunday that three planes and a ground team are scouring a region 18 miles northwest of Truckee looking for the Socata TB-20. Searches resumed Friday after being halted due to weather last week.
