Here's your daily briefing...

When Free is Hardly Free: You know the come-on — sign up for a ‘free trial’ of some product or service, give up your credit-card number, only to find it nearly impossible to cancel before the ‘free-trial’ ends. A bill moving through the legislature seeks to make it easier for people to unhook themselves from these gimmicks.

Drought, Wildfires to Blame: You’d think that with some of the world’s most stringent clean air rules that California would enjoy the nation’s cleanest air; but, you’d be wrong. A report from the American Lung Association blamed an uptick in drought-borne wildfires in recent years for boosting airborne particulates.

Get That Train Through: Despite repeated attempts to lay legal papers across the tracks, the sale of $1.25 billion worth of bonds to help pay for a high speed rail line between Anaheim and San Jose rolled ahead Thursday without a hitch according to the state Treasurer’s office. The next attempt to block the project will concern trying to prevent the state from spending the bond-sale proceeds.

RX — Pay Up: Walgreens Inc., has paid nearly $10 million to the State of California to settle claims, without admitting guilt, that it improperly sought reimbursement from Medi-Cal.

And on the California Report: Decades after Southern California’s aerospace boom, a toxic legacy remains in the soil…Scientists, and those that admire and believe them, are preparing for marches across the state and nation Saturday, the 47th Earth Day…First overcrowding, now mental health — a federal judge is threatening to issue daily fines against California over the state’s failure to provide adequate mental health care inside the state’s sprawling prison system…Trump effect? Stricter visa rules and stories of vacations ruined by red tape at passport control may be contributing to a recent drop off in international tourism to the US. The trend is starting to crimp the economy in tourism dependent Los Angeles.
