North State News Brief: Sept. 26

Here's your morning briefing...

  • Wildfires beaten back: Cal Fire announced that Shasta County’s 100-acre Cow Fire, centered on Old Cow Creek Road and Whitmore Road, is 100 percent contained. Firefighters in the Berry Creek area of Butte County responded wildfire yesterday morning that reached three acres in size before forward progress was halted. Meanwhile 90 residents were evacuated down in Sonoma County over the weekend as a wildfire there burned through 1,500 acres. In the northeast corner of California, the US Forest Service says the 2,650 acre Soup Complex Fire is 60 percent contained.

  • Bucking the bills: A law taking effect next July absolves Californians of responsibility for so-called surprise medical bills. The law addresses the sticker-shock some patients endure when for example, they receive surgery from an in-network hospital and doctor, but an out of network anesthesiologist, for example.

  • Crowd attacks cruiser: And, spectators at an illegal street race or “sideshow” in Fresno trashed a California Highway Patrol car to the tune of $12,000. Windows were shattered and other damage occurred after an officer attempted to stop an SUV performing “doughnut” maneuvers.
