Downtown Redding's Eaton House Now Open

An historic Victorian home in downtown Redding is now open to the public. North State Public Radio’s Kelly Frost has more.

A fixture in Redding history, Judge Richard B Eaton died in 2003, leaving his 1895 home for the public to tour and learn about the era.

Joyce Morrow: “The Judge was an active, active member of the Historical Society and they sort of assumed he would leave it to them. But he set up a separate trust and setting up the museum open to the public showing what life was like in the Victorian era.”

Joyce Morrow says although the Judge left five and a half million dollars, the only money that can be spent is the interest. And that is one reason why it took eleven years to complete the restoration.

Morrow: “The whole house had to be engineered. And then by the time we met all the city codes it was a long and very expensive process. The house was not in good repair. Now the bottom floor is done, we are about to start the second floor, and then we will complete the gazebo.”

The house — across the street from the Shasta County Courthouse — is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
