City of Redding Could Get Say in Lassen Forest Decision-Making Process

The Redding City Council is poised to “invoke coordination” with the Lassen National Forest over its travel management plan.  North State Public Radio’s Kelly Frost explains what that means.

Coordination is a process in which a public entity such as the City of Redding formally asks another agency — such as the Lassen National Forest — for a seat at the table, so to speak, when they deal with certain issues. The city has already done so with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and has been successful in keeping roads open that the forest had previously said it wanted to close to traffic. At Tuesday night’s meeting, Coordination Committee member Sylvia Milligan says she met recently with the Supervisor of the Shasta-Trinity and was asked why the City wanted to invoke coordination.

Milligan: “Where do you think most of the people who recreate in the forest come from? Where do most of the people stay when they come to the area to use the opportunities that we have in the Forest? They stay inside the City of Redding where most of the services are.”

The Forest Service has been required to coordinate since 1982, and have done so with Redding. Now, the council will be asked to coordinate with the Lassen National Forest as well, and will be asked at a future meeting to adopt a resolution stating as much. The Council also got an update from a group which is coordinating on the city’s behalf with the California Air Resources Board over proposed emissions regulations for trucks and other fleets like the City Garbage Collection Vehicles. So far, according to Council Member Gary Cadd, that agency has requests from the City to invoke coordination.
