CA Sees Fewer Hospital Associated Infections, North State Rates Vary

When you enter a hospital you want to leave healthier than you went in.

It looks like California hospitals are doing better on that front. A new report released Wednesday by the California Department of Public Health shows that overall healthcare associated infections, or HAIs, are down in the state; 19,200 were reported in 2014.

Clostridium difficile was the only HAI to see an increase. It’s risen 9 percent since 2011. The report says over the past years, C. difficile has increasingly led to illness and death due to growth of more infectious and virulent strains.

Hospitals that saw a statistically significant increase in C. difficile in the North State in 2014 were Feather River Hospital in Butte County and Rideout Memorial Hospital in Sutter County.
