Barry Hazle Sr., Former Host Of The Shasta Serenade, Has Died

Barry Hazle Sr., host of The Shasta Serenade

We are saddened to share the news that Barry Hazle Sr., former host of The Shasta Serenade, passed away unexpectedly this morning.

Hazle was an esteemed member of the North State Public Radio family for more than 20 years before retiring in January this year. Hazle first started at NSPR as a part-time volunteer host in the late 1990s for the long-running Good Old Fashioned Folk Music Show, eventually becoming the show’s producer. He later developed and hosted The Shasta Serenade, a two-hour Saturday afternoon Americana music program.

Upon his retirement, Hazle said, “I'm very loyal to KCHO and KFPR—now NSPR. I will miss it—there's no doubt about it.”

We will miss him, too. Hazle is survived by his beloved wife, Maline, and family.

We will provide memorial service details as they become available.

Read more about Hazle’s contributions to NSPR and the community in this newsletter feature announcing his retirement this year.
