California schools are beginning to use the new national Common Core standards in classrooms, and art advocates want to make sure the arts are included. County superintendents are developing tools to help schools incorporate art into all aspects of learning. Sarah Anderberg is leading the initiative for the statewide organization of county superintendents. She says art can be used to help teach math, English and history.
Anderberg: “We see all kinds of wonderful possibilities of connecting the arts across the curriculum through discreet arts learning but also in these powerful interdisciplinary settings.”
Anderberg says her group will provide guidelines and professional training on how to incorporate art into daily learning.
Advocates say arts education teaches students critical thinking and discipline while developing their creative skills.
