Cultivating Place, Jennifer Jewell Win Garden Writers Association Awards

Our program, Cultivating Place: Conversations on Natural History and the Human Impulse to Garden, and its host Jennifer Jewell recently received two 2017 Media Awards Gold Medals of Achievement for “Radio Program Overall” and “Radio Talent,” presented by GWA: The Association for Garden Communicators.

These national awards recognize individuals and companies who achieve the highest levels of talent and professionalism in garden communications. The 2017 competition had more than 200 entries in 61 categories. Recipients of the Gold Medal represent the top winners in each competition category in the areas of writing, photography, digital media, broadcast media, publishing, and trade.

“The GWA Media Awards showcase the writers, photographers, editors, publishers, and trade companies that have pursued excellence in gardening communication in print or electronic communications,” said Kirk Brown, president of GWA. “The Media Award winners have been judged by industry experts and show significant distinction and merits that exemplify exceptional work.”

Jewell received the Gold Medals of Achievement for her work hosting and producing the half-hour weekly broadcast program Cultivating Place, which explores the essential connections between nature, our gardens, and our places in both.

Through thoughtful conversations with growers, gardeners, naturalists, scientists, artists, and thinkers, Cultivating Place illustrates the many ways in which gardens and gardening are integral to our natural and cultural literacy. It celebrates how these interconnections support the places we cultivate, how they nourish our bodies and feed our spirits. Cultivating Place airs on North State Public Radio (NSPR) Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

“Past winners of the GWA Media Awards include writers and communicators I admire greatly,” Jewell said. “To be among them makes me very proud of the work of our program team and of the caliber of the guests we've hosted so far. And I love what I do and put a lot of heart and sweat into it—affirmation from this panel of peers means a lot. I was pretty excited when I first heard—still am!”

Since the early 1980s, the GWA Media Awards program has recognized outstanding writing, photography, graphic design and illustration for books, newspaper stories, magazine articles, and other works focused on gardening. In recent years, the awards program has expanded to include on-air talent, production and direction for radio, television, video, internet, and other electronic media.
